two shadows
two shadows walk home at midnight
one comes from the pond across the park
a scarlet summer in the July moonlight
another arrives beneath the forest bark
they listen to the clocks in their free time
and wait till the hands have been set right
they fall asleep to the hum of wind chimes
ignoring the monarch in blithe flight
pitch ink, they glide onward, aglow as pale silver sprites
two shadows walk home at midnight
they’re now too far from where they flew their kites
one holds the hot lamplight high and then higher
it’s a tempting sight to see
two shadows walking home at midnight
singing let it be, let it be, let it be
once more they waltz in silence, a unison of nothing less
to the sides, they sway in rhythm
to say they’re here and we’re the ones that are blessed
it’s when you meet these two shadows
you'll understand much more
it’s when you know these impish strangers
you’ll open those fair locked, drawn doors
in the dog day frost of early dawn
the dewdrops that hang from grass
two shadows graze their teeth upon
and scorch the earth with their looking glass
leave the shadows to roam forever
towards the superstitious end of day
turn away from those strange shadows
for they’ll think of you as prey
two shadows walk home at midnight
they skip together hand in hand
two shadows stroll past the wood church cross
disappearing to another land
goodbye to the two strange figures
their silhouettes breaking spines
thank god we’re rid of the two shadows
or else they’ll have become mine
